We’re Hiring!

Did you hear? Blackbird is hiring a part-time office assistant!

I’m looking for someone dynamic, detail-oriented, and passionate about fabric (of course!). This person will be working with me in our new East Vancouver office – they’ll be responsible for order fulfilment, receiving goods, some customer service, and keeping the office and inventory organized. It’s a hands-on physical job – but it will also be fun, laid back, and inspiring. We’re basically shipping little packages of happiness and creativity all over the world after all!

It’s been so busy around these parts, and I’m thrilled that it’s time to get some help. I am very ready to have more time to work on the business instead of in the business. This feels like another huge step, and it’s freaking exciting!

If you’d like read the details about the job, or if you know someone who might be interested, here’s the link to our careers page. Please feel free to share!

Cone Mills Denim is available for pre-order!

I’m so excited to announce that Cone Mills denim will be available at Blackbird Fabrics! I got my hands on some amazing 10oz Cone Mills S-Gene stretch denim in three colours, and you can pre-order yours now!

This stretch denim is light-medium weight, with a crisp hand feel that will soften with washing. It’s especially perfect for sewing your own jeans, and also suitable for denim jackets, skirts, and shorts.

Cone Mills is well known for its high quality made in the USA denim. Their patented S-Gene technology blends cotton with a little bit of polyester and spandex to create a long lasting denim that holds its shape without stretching or bagging out.

Pre-order is open until this Friday, April 7th, at 11:59 pm PST or while quantities last.

We are offering this beautiful denim in three classic colours: dark indigodarker indigo, and black.

Great news: If you order before Friday at midnight, you’ll get your denim at a special price! We’re selling it this week only for $19.50 / meter instead of our regular price of $21.00 / meter (Canadian).

Hope you’re as excited as I am about this! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me in the comments.

Pre-order your denim now!

Big News

Hi, there!  Guess what? This week I signed a lease on a new space for Blackbird Fabrics. That’s right – we’re moving! But first, let me back up a bit…

You may not know this, but for the past 2.5 years, I have been running this small business out of a bedroom in our Vancouver apartment. It’s worked well, but lately, I feel like I’ve outgrown the space, like big time.

So I started looking for the perfect spot a couple of weeks ago, and I really didn’t expect to find something so quickly. But when I walked into this place, it felt meant to be. It’s big and airy with beautiful natural light and high ceilings. I can’t wait to show you guys.

Since the new space is empty now, I was able to sign the lease and get the keys immediately. So now I am holding the keys to a sunny and open studio space in a great area of East Vancouver. I honestly could not be more excited. It’s perfect.

The past few days have been filled with celebration and reflection. I find myself feeling so humbled by the support I’ve received over the years. I’m also incredibly excited for the future, and what this means for my small business. This feels like a success for me personally, but also for the community we’ve built. You guys are passionate about fabric, as am I! I’m proud to be a part of the exciting and ever evolving world of home sewing.

Okay, here’s the fun part! I’m having a sale to clear out some inventory. The less I have to physically move, the better. 🙂 Also because I love you guys and I want to celebrate with you.

Everything in the shop is 20% off now through Friday, March 31st at 11:59 pm PST.
No code is required, the discount will automatically be applied at checkout.

Visit the shop and celebrate with me! I couldn’t have done this without you.

Holiday Shipping Schedule 2016

We’ll be taking a little break from shipping during the holidays. You have a few days left to get your order in! Here are the key dates…

  • Place your order by Sunday, December 18th if you’d like it to ship before our break.
  • Our online store will remain open, so you can still shop to your heart’s content while we’re away.
  • Orders placed between December 19th and January 1st will begin shipping on January 2nd.

Next week I’m jetting off to Montreal to hang with family, recharge my batteries, and bake lots of cookies. Of course I’ll spend this weekend frantically sewing all the things in anticipating of my trip. That is the plight of a sewist, isn’t it? I couldn’t possibly face my family on Christmas without a new dress on. 🙂

I hope you have a relaxing and cozy time ahead of you, wherever you are this holiday season.

Cheers!

Local Event this Sunday!

Hi friends! This Sunday I’m taking Blackbird on the road for the first time! I’m so excited to have a booth at the vendor market for the ASDP annual conference. I’ll be there with fabrics, bra kits, and sewing patterns. The vendor market is open to the public and admission is free. Even if you aren’t attending the conference, you can come to the market tomorrow. Here are the details:

Date: Sunday, October 23rd 2016
Time: 12:00pm – 6:00pm
Place: Westin Wall Center in Richmond, BC

The Association of Sewing and Design Professionals has hundreds of members across Canada and the US. Every year, the members of the ASDP come together for a conference. This year, for the first time, it’s in Canada!

Read all about the ASDP here, and visit the event facebook page for the vendor market here (some great companies will be selling at the market, including Thread Theory, yay!).

If you’re local, come and say hi! I’d love to meet you. If not, feel free to follow along on instagram. It’s going to be a fun day!
